At the very height of the War of Independence, the people were called upon to elect 120 representatives and on 14TH February 1949 the first session of Israel's Legislature - the Knesset - was convened in temporary quarters. The cornerstone for a permanent home for the Knesset was set in 1958 on a high and rugged hill in the western part of Jerusalem, the nation's capital. The "Knesset Law 5718 (1948)" stipulated that among its major functions, the Knesset shall make laws, approve the Cabinet and scrutinize its work, and elect the President of the State. |

The Bank of Israel, the central bank of the State of Israel, was established on the basis of the "Bank of Israel Law 5714", passed in the Knesset in 1954. The bank is headed by a governor appointed by the President of the State of Israel for a term of five years. He is assisted by an advisory board consisting of seven members and a governing board of 15 members, all appointed by the government. The governor also serves as economic advisor to the government. The Bank of Israel is the nation's sole issuing authority of legal tender coins and banknotes.
An unknown amount of silver medals has on the obverse the inscription "Ya'akov Meshorer". Ya'akov Meshorer (1935-2004) was during his life the greatest Israeli numismatist, served on the advisory committee for the design of coins and banknotes, served as Professor of numismatics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and head of the numismatic division of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and wrote 19 numismatic books. The medal with his inscription is undocumented. |

Meir Dizengoff, the first mayor of Tel Aviv, assigned his private house in 1931 as a home for Tel Aviv's museum. As years went by the house on Rothschild Boulevard was no longer capable of serving the purpose for which it was assigned. In 1962 the municipality set aside a large tract of land on King Saul Boulevard and in 1971 the new building was inaugurated. It contains many exhibition halls and pavilions for display, as well as a large auditorium. |

The Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet LeIsrael, or Keren Kayemet in short), the chosen instrument of the Zionist Organization for land redemption in Palestine, was founded in 1901 (5662). Its purposes were defined as follows: "To use donations by the people for the acquisition of land for the people, to enable the settler to work the land with his own means, to make Hebrew labor secure, to put an end to land speculation." By the end of 1948, the Fund had redeemed about a million dunams (100,000 hectares or 250,000 acres), mostly from absentee owners. Keren Kayemet drained the swamps, prepared the land, paved roads, planted forests on land unsuitable for cultivation. In 1960 a unified authority was established "The Israel Land Authority" to manage the national land resources. Preparing land for settlement, draining work, forestation and road construction were allocated to the "Land Development and Management", a subdivision of the JNF. |

The rapid development of the Israeli economy and various technological advances in the field of transportation and marketing have created new challenges for the Israeli sea ports. These challenges included the necessity to adjust the rapid growth of traffic which required greater freight capacity as well as the need for faster and more efficient handling of freight. The Ports Authority is responsible for maintaining the sea ports in a manner to fit the needs or making the necessary improvements and obtaining the skill and technology required for the operations. |

The names of many famous Jews are interwoven in the history of the Zionist Organization of America. The best known among them are the President of the Zionist Organization - Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, Louis Lipski - writer and journalist, Rabbi Stephen Wise. Among the early activists of the ZOA was Judah Leib Magnes, who immigrated to Palestine, and became Chancellor-President of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1972 the Zionist Organization of America held its convention in Israel, marking 75 years since its foundation. On the medal's obverse in the centre appears the English text "75th ZOA Jubilee Convention". Around the rim, a Hebrew inscription "The Zionist Organization of America, 75th Jubilee Convention - The Third Annual Convention Held in Israel, 1-8 Av 5732", continuing in English, "July 12-19, 1972, Third in Israel". |

The Exchange National Bank of Chicago was the first American Bank to open a branch in Israel. The bank was opened in Tel Aviv in 1970, after a merger it was renamed American-Israel Bank, and in 1996 was amalgamated into Bank Hapoalim. The Exchange Bank initiated since its opening several "American" innovations unknown in Israel, such as returning redeemed canceled checks to the issuing customer. This practice was later discontinued because of disinterest by Israeli customers. And the bank was more user-friendly towards English-speaking customers than traditional Israeli banks, because all its correspondence and documentation was truly bilingual.
The bank was located in the Shalom Tower, the large building in the center of
the picture taken in 1973, which then proudly claimed to be the tallest building
in the Middle East. |

On 26 June 1938, some five months prior to the Kristallnacht (Crystal Night, Night of the Broken Glass), the Nazi propaganda mouthpiece Der Stürmer proclaimed: "A stain of shame disappears! Due to traffic [safety] reasons the synagogue in Munich has to be torn down." On 25 July 1972, a new synagogue was dedicated in downtown Munich. It was erected on the site of the same building torn down the by the Nazis, the Central Synagogue. |

The Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation had issued special medals for the Prime Ministers Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin and Menachem Begin. The medals were minted in limited quantities and intended to be awarded to Heads of State and other people of high distinction among the nations as a gift from the Prime Minister of Israel. Most of the medals were issued in the form of a key inside a ring - an opening at the top for a chain. Some were issued as regular medals. |

The Mossad (full name in English: Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations) is the national intelligence agency of Israel. "Mossad" is the Hebrew word for institute or institution. The Mossad is responsible for intelligence collection and covert operations. Possibly the most famous act of intelligence gathering and covert action was the search for and apprehension of the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, who was brought from Argentina to Israel in 1960, where he was tried and executed for his major role in the extermination of six million European Jews.
On the medal's obverse appears the biblical quote "For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure (Proverbs 11:14), the former motto of the Mossad, flanked by the State emblem. The reverse depicts an olive branch. The text reads: "This people would certainly have have said 'thank you' to the undercover fighters and the people of secret and mystery, and possibly add some nice words from the heart; this people certainly would have wanted, if it would have known the address" (from 'The undercover fighters", a poem by Haim Hefer).
The existence of this medal was never published and documented by the IGCMC. |

During the 25 years since the State of Israel was founded, its population had increased five-fold, scores of cities were been built, hundreds of villages established on land part of which was desolate or desert; agricultural production had risen and a modern industrial complex had won export markets. During those first 25 years, national security was the major problem and Israel suffered greatly in the loss of life and property-damage during the wars. Despite its victories or the battlefield, however, the quest for peace with Arab neighbors started to bear fruit only at a later stage, when peace treaties were signed with Egypt (1979 and Jordan (1994). |

When the medal was issued in 1973, Maariv was still Israel's largest daily newspaper, known for its independence and high standards. Since then it has gone downhill, especially since the 1990s when it was taken over by the unscrupulous son of a local businessman. In 1973 Maariv celebrated its 25th anniversary. The medal's obverse features the famous caricature by Dosh (Kariel Gardosh) of a boy's head wearing a "tembel" hat -symbolizing Israel, with a stylized number 25 in the center. On the reverse appears a stack of newspapers, on top of which appears the Hebrew text "Maariv, the newspaper with the widest circulation in Israel". In English "Maariv daily". On the rim, the dates "5708-5733 15.2.48-15.2.73". |

Shaare Zedek Hospital has been associated with the Jewish community in Israel since 1873. It commenced as a clinic inside the old city of Jerusalem, with the help of Jews from Europe. In 1902 Dr. Moshe Wallach's Hospital, the forerunner of Shaare Zedek, was opened outside the city walls. The hospital kept vigil, guarding the people's health in times of plague, during riots and during intervals of calm. During the War of Independence, throughout the siege of Jerusalem, Shaare Zedek was often under enemy fire, but its medical work did not stop. On the obverse of the medal appears the emblem of the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. In the center: "Shaare Zedek Centenary" and the translation in English. The dates "5633-5733" and "1873-1973" appear below. A stylized projection of the Medical Center being erected appears on the reverse, with a panorama of Jerusalem in the background. The inscription on the rim reads: "In the service of Jerusalem". The English translation appears on the lower part of the medal. |

For more than 20 years there was opposition from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to the awarding of medals. At the head of the opposition stood David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, who was content to distribute 12 badges "Hero of Israel" following the War of Independence, and to empower the Chief of Staff and IDF commanders to award "Merit Badges". The Knesset adopted the "Law of Awards" in 1970. The details regarding awards were set forth in 1973 and the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation issued the medals. Distinguished Service Medal: A balanced torch between sword and olive branch symbolizes controlled strength. The ribbon is blue as in the national colors.
Medal of Courage: Swords entwined by an olive branch forming the silhouette of a candelabra. The ribbon is red, symbolizing fire and blood in battle. Medal of Valour: Awarded by the Minister of Defense on the recommendation of the Chief of Staff for supreme acts of heroism in time of war, facing the enemy and at the risk of life. |

Numerous conquering armies have marched through the Land of Israel: Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Crusaders, Arabs, Turks. All of them destroyed flora and fauna in order to supply their own needs. "Hai-Bar", the Negev nature preservation authority, seeks to restore to the land of the Bible the animals mentioned in the Bible. It gathers and raises them inside a nature Reverse protected by the law of "the Nature Reverses Authority" which in 1973 marked the first decade since its establishment. |

The General Security Service (GSS), known outside Israel by its acronym "Shin-Bet" (the first letters of the partial Hebrew name Sherut Bitahon), is Israel's internal intelligence and security agency. It protects the State against terrorism, sabotage, espionage and other security threats, for instance originating from the Palestinian Authority or areas under Israeli military control. Almost all operations of the GSS are shrouded in mystery. Because of its preventive actions, many deadly terrorist assaults on Israel and its civilian population have been foiled since its foundation in mid-1948, only several months after Israel became independent. The GSS is also known for its competence in pursuing and apprehending of terror suspects and perpetrators of terrorist outrages against Israel, both the actual terrorists and their handlers.
The "Shin-Bet" medal's obverse has two versions; one with the words "State of Israel" and without the State emblem, and the other without the name "State of Israel but with the State emblem. On both obverses appears the Hebrew name Sherut Bitahon Clali (General Security Service), from which the better known acronym "Shin-Bet" is derived. The common reverse depicts the motto of the GSS, "Defender that shall not be seen".
All medals were issued for the exclusive use of the GSS, and its issuance was not published by the IGCMC. In 1980 the Israeli press published reports that an unknown number of version I surfaced both in Israel and the US and may have found their way illegally to an auction house, dealers and collectors. |

Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) was unique in the rare constellation of artists who became symbols and legends in their own lifetime. Faithful to the Jewish people, dedicated with every fiber of his being to the State of Israel, he maintained close ties with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Arthur Rubinstein's agreement to the holding of an International Piano Master Competition, to serve as its Honorary President and lend his name to it, were important contributions to the cultural life of the Jewish State. He is considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, probably the greatest. |

TChaim Weizmann was born in 1874 in the town of Motol in the west of the Russian empire (now Belarus). He acquired his secondary education in Pinsk. He pursued his studies in Chemistry in Germany and Switzerland. Weizmann was among the chief activists in the Zionist cause from his early youth. In 1904 he was appointed lecturer at the University of Manchester, England. By reason of his scientific discoveries he was appointed two years later as laboratory chief of the British Admiralty Chemical Laboratories. It was his assiduous negotiations with the British Government during the First World War that brought about the Balfour Declaration. In 1921 Weizmann served as the President of the Zionist Organization and in 1929 he established the Jewish Agency and became its President. In 1934 Weizmann established in Rehovot the "Daniel Sief Institute for Research" which later became the "Weizmann Institute of Science". On the eve of the Second World War, during and after the war Weizmann was at the center of the political struggle which reached its climax with the establishment of the State in 1948. He was elected its first President and died in office in November 1952. This medal was issued on the occasion of the centennial of Weizmann's birth. The medal's obverse shows the effigy Chaim Weizmann and the words "Chaim Weizmann, first President of Israel" in Hebrew and English. |

The Technion in Haifa is the oldest academic institution in Israel. Although the cornerstone was laid in 1912, the opening of the Technion was delayed by the "language war" (what language to use in teaching, German or Hebrew?). Further delays were caused by the military forces which requisitioned it for their use during the First World War. In 1924, when it finally opened, the first course offered was Engineering. Over the years, the Technion expanded greatly, and after the establishment of the State it emerged into a new era. The faculty of Aeronautical Engineering was opened, and then the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. The remarkable growth of the electronics industry in Israel was closely linked to the training offered by the Technion in electronic engineering. The Technion, which started as a school of engineering, has become a university of technology with a high international reputation. The medal was issued in three versions, with a different design for medals minted in tombac, silver and gold. The obverse is common to all medals, the emblem of the Technion and the legend "Technion Jubilee - Israel Institute of Technology 5688-5738". In English the dates are "1924-1974". The reverse of the tombac medal depicts a three-dimensional modular structure based on a square, as one of the fundamental solid forms (square, circle and triangle). In the centre of the reverse of the silver medal are numbers and an area divided into set segments, symbolizing mathematics. |

The diamond export industry - diamonds and gems polished in Israel - has become one of the largest of its kind in the world. Its beginnings date back to the 1930s, with the arrival of diamond merchants from the Low Countries. Most of its activities are conducted from the "Diamond Exchange" buildings in Ramat Gan, one of the most modern centers for the international trade of rough and polished diamonds. |

In 1974 the Bank of Israel celebrated its 20th anniversary. The central bank of the State of Israel was established on the basis of the "Bank of Israel Law 5714", passed in the Knesset in 1954. The reverse depicts a schematic panorama of Jerusalem, and the inscription "Jerusalem" in Hebrew and English. |

Following the destruction of the Second Temple, Benei Beraq became a centre for learning. In biblical times it was part of the land allotted to the tribe of Dan (Joshua 19:45). The contemporary Benei Beraq was founded in 1924 by Hassidim from Warsaw. It attained fame because of its Ponivizer Yeshiva and the Yeshiva of the "Chazon Ish". Today there are many industries in Benei Beraq.
On the obverse, inside a panel in the form of the Two Tablets of the Law, is Benei Beraq municipal emblem, followed by the dates: "5684-5734", the inscription "Fiftieth Jubilee' in Hebrew, the civil dates "1924-1974", and the English inscription "Benei Beraq 50 years". |

The Mandatory police began to disband in the wake of the United Nations resolution recommending the division of Palestine, passed on 29 November 1947. The Jewish policemen in the coastal region stayed on duty, but there was a shortage of commanders and technicians who could take the place of the British. However, within two years, available manpower was doubled and the needed equipment was ordered. Today the Israel Police is an example of integration and social mobility, with both men and women, Jews, Arabs and Druze serving in all ranks and units. Four classes of medals are awarded by the Israeli Police. Medal of Valour: |

About a million and a half Jews served in the Allied Forces during the Second World War. However, the 35,000 Jewish volunteers from Eretz Israel serving in the British Forces fulfilled a unique national service as representatives of the Hebrew State in the making. Following a protracted struggle with the British Government, "The Brigade" was established in 1944 - A Jewish Fighting Unit - its emblem included the Star of David. The Unit participated in the battles of the Eighth Army. Its members extended aid to the survivors of the holocaust and played an important role in organizing "escape routes" and clandestine immigration. The volunteer movement was nothing less than a reflection of Jewish valor, honor, redemption and independence. The graves of its 1706 casualties can be found from the Persian Gulf to North Africa, from Ethiopia to Northern Italy, forming the milestones along the many roads leading to the establishment of the State of Israel. |

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was the first university to be established in Israel. On land purchased on Mount Scopus, the cornerstone was laid by Dr. Chaim Weizmann on 24 July 1918. The opening ceremony took place on 1 April 1925. The War of Independence witnessed the severing of the link between Jewish Jerusalem and Mount Scopus. A second campus was built on Giv'at Ram and a medical center was started in Ein Kerem. In the wake of the Six Day War, the 19-year siege on Mount Scopus came to an end, and a short while thereafter renovation of the campus on Mount Scopus began. Today the Hebrew University is spread over four complexes, on Mount Scopus, Giv'at Ram, Ein Kerem and Rehovot. |

Absorption faces many problems in a land that keeps its gates open to Jewish immigrants, many from poor countries. The immigrants partly arrive without means or advance preparation to meet local conditions. Absorption begins at the air terminal, and its task is not complete until the new immigrant has housing and has found employment, whether based on past skills or newly acquired ones. Moreover, immigrants' children must be placed in schools and the immigrant himself must reach a point of economic independence. In the center of the reverse is a stem, the top of which bears a flower in the form of a Star of David. In place of stamens appears the seven-branched candelabruma. The Hebrew citation on the rim reads: "I will plant them upon their land and they shall not forsake it again" (Amos 15:15). The short English translation reads: "I will plant them upon their land." |

"Hassneh" was an Israeli insurance firm, founded in 1925 by the Histadrut Labor Federation. Until the 1980s the company expanded rapidly, to become Israel's largest insurance group. Because of mismanagement the company became insolvent in the early 1990s, and after its assets had been acquired by other insurance groups, Hassneh was liquidated in 1992. The term "Hassneh" (the bush) is derived from the biblical Burning Bush (Exodus 3:1-15), the word "Sneh" literally meaning "brambles".

Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus, ca. 1940. |
|||||||||||
|
The Hadassah University Hospital on Mount Scopus was dedicated in 1939 and rapidly acquired a reputation for being the best equipped in the Middle East. With the increasing attacks on the Jewish community, intending to frustrate the establishment of a Jewish State, access to Mount Scopus became more and more dangerous. In May 1948, it became necessary to evacuate the last of the medical staff from Mount Scopus. Soldiers of "Haganah" were left behind to maintain Jewish sovereignty and to guard the installation. Jerusalem was reunited in June 1967, after the Six Day War. Hadassah leaders raised their ensign on Mount Scopus and declared: 'This is the banner of a war against ignorance, disease - the banner of peace. On raising it we hereby vow - this hospital shall come back to life again." In the center of the obverse appears the Hadassah emblem. On both sides the dates "5736-1975". On the rim the legend: "Hadassah University Hospital, Mt. Scopus" in Hebrew and in English. |

Advanced technology and improved living standards have made it possible for man to pay attention to other pursuits besides working for a living. In Israel, there are many hobbyists who present their products or collections at exhibitions. Some two hundred hobbyists participated in the 1975 show, displaying a high degree of professional and artistic skills, from painting, sculpting, copper smithing, jewelry, modeling to products fashioned out of string and matches, stamp and coin collections, etc. The obverse shows a globe covered by a ribbon showing flags, signifying the international character of the show. Above it an inscription in raised letters: "International Hobby Exhibition". On the rim on both sides an inscription: "Tel Aviv 5736" in Hebrew. The English translation has the date "1975". |
