The motif on the obverse of the 1 Agora trade coin was taken from a coin depicting a war galley, issued by Herod Archelaus, Ethnarch of Samaria, Judea and Idumea. Most coins minted during his rule (4 BC - 6 AD) have a nautical theme. |

5 Agorot |
The obverse of the 5 Agorot trade coin is modeled after a coin minted during the 4th year (69 - 70 AD) of the First Judeo-Roman war (66 - 73 AD). Depicted are a lulav (a ripe, green, closed frond of the date palm tree), flanked by two etrogim (citrons). The inscription on the coin reads "Year Four". It is interesting to note that the characters on the coin are of the Middle Hebrew alphabet which was used in the Holy Land from approximately 1300 to 400 BC, instead of the Late Hebrew alphabet (in use from around 400 BC to 100 AD). |

* As from its Annual Report for 2005, the Bank of Israel stopped publishing the names of Mints at which Israeli coins are minted, and also stopped publishing mintage figures for each year. However, the Bank continues to publish the total number of coins in circulation by denomination on 31 December of each year. The increase of coins in circulation during a given year does not necessarily reflect the number of coins minted during that same year and bearing the same Hebrew date. For instance, the Hebrew year does not correspond with the Gregorian calendar, additional coins placed into circulation during a given year may not necessarily bear the Hebrew date of that same year and may bear earlier dates, and there are years when no coins of one or more denominations are minted. Hence, mintage figures from 2005 onwards are mostly speculative, and are listed here because no other - more reliable - data is available. |

Shown on the obverse of the 10 Agorot trade coin is a fragment from a coin, issued by Mattathias Antigonus (40 - 37 BC), depicting a Menorah (seven-armed candelabrum). The design of the 10 Agorot coin was the subject of a short-lived controversy in the late 1980s, when Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat claimed that the obverse design of this coin incorporates a map of a "Greater Israel" that "goes from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia, from the Red Sea to the Euphrates". This claim was quickly refuted by Israeli politicians and academics, who pointed out that the motif on the 10 Agorot coin - and all other Israeli coins - are selected for historical value only. This design was also adopted as the logo of the Bank of Israel, and appeared previously on the 100 'old' Sheqalim trade coin (KM-143). |

The obverse of the ½ New Sheqel trade coin depicts a detail of an ancient Hebrew jasper seal, on which a tiny lyre is carved. The seal, inscribed "Ma'adana Daughter of the King" (not depicted on the coin), is part of the numismatic collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and is estimated to date back to the 7th century BC. |

1 New Sheqel |
The motif on the obverse of the 1 New Sheqel trade coin dates back to the 4th century BC, the period when Judea was ruled by the Persian empire. The coin from which the 1 New Sheqel design was taken, was a silver Obol of Judah, with inscription YHD, minted in Jerusalem circa 350 BC. This is one of the earliest Jewish coins, as well as one of the artistic highlights of Jewish numismatics. It depicts a lily, symbol of purity and regarded as the choicest among flowers. In the words of the prophet Hosea, the lily became the flower symbol of Israel: "I will be like the dew for Israel; he shall blossom like the lily" (Hosea 14:6). The motif of the lily is apparently derived from the design which graced the capitals of the two main pillars which stood in front of the Temple - Jachin and Boaz. The lily became a popular motif in Jewish art of the Second Temple period, and also appears on coins struck in Jerusalem during the second and first centuries BC under Antiochus VII, John Hyrcanus I and Alexander Jannaeus. |

2 New Sheqalim |
The obverse design of the 2 New Sheqalim trade coin has been taken from a coin minted during the reign of John (Yehohanan) Hyrcanus I (134 - 104 BC), and depicts a double cornucopiae (horns of plenty). The cornucopia is an ancient symbol from the Hellenic period when it appeared on coins and artworks. It is a hollow animal horn, shown here draped in ribbons and filled with fruit and grain, which at the time was a symbol of plenty. The pomegranate, shown between the two horns, is also a symbol of plenty and fertility. |

New Sheqalim |

The obverse of the 5 New Sheqalim trade coin is adorned by a detail of a typical proto-Ionic capital of a column from the Israelite period (10th - 7th century BC). Similar capitals have been excavated in Jerusalem's City of David, Ramat Rachel (South of Jerusalem) and Megiddo. The proto-Ionic capital was also used on Israelite seals in the early Iron Age. |

The obverse core of the 10 New Sheqalim trade coin depicts a palm tree, flanked by two baskets with dates. The outer ring is inscribed "For the Redemption of Zion", in Middle Hebrew and modern Hebrew characters.. |
