SHEQEL The Online Catalog of Israel Numismatics 1927 - present Design, Layout and How to Use |
The SHEQEL catalog was created to serve two purposes; to be the first (and until now the only) online catalog of the entire spectrum of modern Holy Land numismatics, but also to closely resemble a printed catalog. The catalog is divided into chapters each dealing with subjects such as Trade Coins, Banknotes, Commemorative Coins, Medals, Tokens etc. Each chapter is laid out in exact chronological order, each page covering a defined period. Catalog numbers will generally correspond with the KM-numbering of Krause Publication's Standard Catalog of World Coins (British Mandatory Palestine & Israel) and the P-numbering of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money. However, when deemed necessary by us, suffixes are added to better identify varieties of the same coin or banknote. In some cases - such as Official Mint and Hanukka Sets - the SHEQEL catalog deviates from the KM-MS numbering system due to the many errors and omissions in the Standard Catalog of World Coins. In the State & Official Medals chapter, as well as the chapter dealing with tokems etc., we created our proprietary chronological catalog numbering system, also using the IGCMC/ICMC catalog numbers for cross reference purposes. |

Grading |
For defining the quality and preservation of trade coins and banknotes, the SHEQEL catalog uses the European and internationally accepted two-letter grading system. Commemorative coins are by definition Uncirculated, and are therefore classified as either BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) or Proof. Commemorative coins defined by the ICMC as Prooflike are listed by us as BU. For more detailed information on coin and banknote grading, please refer to Coin Grading and Notaphily in the Wikipedia Encyclopedia. |

Valuations |
The valuations listed for each coin, banknote, medal and token, are based on a variety of factors. We periodically check the sales prices of several major online dealers in Israel and world numismatics (rosenblumcoins.com, commem.com, israelmint.com, isracoins.com, pomexport.com, banknotes.com, etc.). Precious metal coins and medals that are traded around their gold or silver bullion content are valuated accordingly. However, because of the extreme fluctuations in precious metal prices, values listed in the SHEQEL catalog may be outdated shortly after having been updated. Hence, we strongly advise our readers not to use valuations in the SHEQEL catalog as a single source of reference when buying or selling Israel numismatic material, but also check sales prices of the websites listed above, as well as closed auctions and sales on eBay. |
